Today I went to the Hepworth Wakefield art museum to visit Viviane Sassen’s ‘HOT MIRROR’ exhibition which brings together over 60 different pieces of her work. Sassen’s work is known for the surrealism such as the shadows, fragmented bodies and landscapes which have created different surrealist collections.
I then walked into a moving image room where Sassen’s images were being projected around the room. This room was very intriguing and I felt I was part of her art, as when I was stood in the room my shadows were blocking part of her images to be projected onto the walls. This was similar to pieces of her work with are very surreal. I then decided to try and capture these surreal images.
One of Viviane Sassen’s collections that is a big part of her life is her ‘flamboya’ collection, which was founded in Kenyan as she lived there for 3 years. ‘The Flamboya’ collection is based solely on portraits taken in her town, some are staged others are spontaneous. This was a very moving collection of peoples lives we don’t see on a day to day basis.
